What is a roadmap? Well it can be a map of a road (!) but during the Covid-19 crisis, the government often used the phrase ‘The Roadmap’. This was their strategy for the country to move forward and bring things back to ‘normal’. A roadmap is a way through, putting up signposts to direct people from one place to a defined point.
So here is the roadmap that the Prime Minister set out in February 2021 for England…
The Bible tells us that God has a plan for our lives. And we know that God’s plans are always only good. They’re good for us, for other people, for God and even for the nations of the world and society around us. This is a different way of thinking to the world and media around us who are always criticising God and Christians, thinking it is all irrelevant or a fairy tale. Not true. God’s ways are always relevant and always best.
Our lives are not random accidents or chance (like some people who don’t believe in God think). Instead, God has a roadmap for each of our lives and if we follow God’s plan, we will avoid many accidents and incidents along the way! While other people are crashing and breaking down all the time because they reject God, we can be sure that if we follow God, things will work out for good even when we have unfortunate ‘breakdowns’!
Let’s imagine a timeline of your life.
Before you were even born into the world, God existed and knew about you. And God will be with us through all our life if we let him in to our lives and say yes to him being boss. The incredible thing is that when we say yes to God, he will be with us every step of our journey, every twist and turn of our life. He’s with us all the time (even when we don’t feel like it) through every season and every event of our life. God has a specific and incredible roadmap planned out for us and is with us every step of the way – and beyond to when we die and go to be with Jesus in heaven.
Let’s look at just one verse from the Bible:
(God) creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doingEphesians 2.10
Another version of this Bible verse talks about ‘good works which God has prepared beforehand for us to do.’ So what this is telling us is that we are created by God, with a purpose and that purpose is to do good works. A ‘good work’ is simply doing what God says and following his plan for our life. He will show you the plan for your life and will keep showing you the next step and the next thing. If God doesn’t say anything specifically then pick something you like or are good at and get busy doing that. As you do that, God will direct you – even when it doesn’t seem to make sense or you don’t understand! God’s roadmap is always best.
A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?Proverbs 20.24
Have you ever been involved in a drama group or theatre? If you have, you’ll know that there is always a director of the play. This person’s job is to put together how the play should happen and give the overview of what each person should do. They should understand the play and be able to direct the actors to play their part well. A good director allows you to be yourself and to showcase your skills and abilities. They free you up to be the very best you that you can be. That is what God does!
God is also like a SatNav. A SatNav gives us the very best directions we can have to get from one place to another. It tells us about the problems on the road and where the problems are. It gives us the best route and it will also help us get back on track when we go wrong!
God has a good plan for our lives. Just remember that not everything that happens is always good but God is good and his plans are good and he will turn bad stuff around for good! So God’s plan is our roadmap and he is also the very best kind of director you will ever find. He directs us, shows us the way and helps us get back on track if we go wrong somewhere. He can see what is happening and what will happen and prevent us from crashing and burning if we listen to him and obey him. God does this by his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God in us and with us. He shows us what to do.
But the Advocate (someone who works on your behalf), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.John 14.26
It’s A Wrap
So let’s put all this together in a few points to help!
- God has a plan for your life – a roadmap. It is the best plan and is specific to you.
- When we invite God into our life, he helps us navigate and find our way.
- God’s plan is a really good plan and the very best life we can have is to follow his plan.
- When we follow God’s roadmap (obeying God), he will protect us from crashes and navigation errors and even when bad things happen, he will turn them round for good if we let him.
- God is like the best SatNav – showing us the way and keeping us on track!
- God is our director – he directs our steps, plans our way and helps you be the very best you can be!
- If we believe in God, we have the Holy Spirit in us to guide us every step of the roadmap.
