Intro

Please read through before using this sketch – it contains a sort of ‘car crash’. Some people may be sensitive. I’m not being insensitive before anyone accuses me of this – my own brother was killed in a car crash.

The sketch

(2 people, husband & wife driving along in their car)

Husband – Right, let’s be off then, down the road of life.

Wife – Don’t we need a map?

Husband – No, no! God will be leading me. As it says in Proverbs 3:6, ‘Always let God lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.’

Wife – I hope you’re sure about this.

Husband – Quite clear. I won’t be driving, I’ll just be following the Scriptures that God lays on my heart. Wherever I feel the Spirit leading me, I’ll go that way.

Wife – Mmm. I hope the Spirit doesn’t lead you down the wrong side of the road.

(Start driving along).

Husband – (Suddenly swerves to the left).

Wife – What are you doing?

Husband – There was an angel in the road – I was swerving to avoid him. After all, does it not say in Psalm 28:8 that the Lord protects his chosen ones.

Wife – (Shakes her head).

Husband – (Suddenly speeds up top a ridiculous speed).

Wife – Why are we going so fast, we’ll get caught

Husband – Don’t worry. The Lord has led me past this part of Exeter, it’s evil. Does not Psalm 1 verse 6 say, ‘The Lord protects everyone who follows him, but the wicked follow a road that leads to ruin.’

Wife – (Looks at H, bewildered). Hey, look at that car to our left, it’s got a punctured tyre! Let’s stop and help.

Husband – No dear. Does it not say in Proverbs 4:24, ‘Keep looking straight ahead, without turning aside.’

(Suddenly takes his hand off the steering wheel & behind his head).

Wife – (Splutters). What now?

Husband – Does it not say in Isaiah 30:21, ‘Whether you turn to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice saying “This is the road! Now follow it!” ‘

Wife – (Can’t get the words out).

Husband – (Closes his eyes).

Wife – WHAT ARE YOU DOING, ARE YOU MAD You’ll go to sleep!!!

Husband – Don’t worry dear, the Spirit is leading me We’ll be perfectly safe. After all, Psalm 121:3, ‘The Lord is your protector, and he won’t go to sleep or let you stumble.’

Wife – You’ve lost it.

Husband – No dear, in verse 4 it says, ‘the protector of Israel doesn’t doze or ever get drowsy.’

Wife – The protector of Israel? I think you’ve really lost the plot now.

(Pause as they continue driving)

Wife – Er, dear, the road ahead is closed, we’re going towards a river

Husband – Oh dear, what lack of faith, for does not the Bible say in Proverbs 4:27, ‘Don’t make a mistake by turning to the left or to the right.’ I will only turn my eyes towards heaven – Psalm 123:1, ‘Our Lord and our God, I turn my eyes to you, on your throne in heaven.’

(Wife jumps for cover as car falls into river with husband remaining inside)

Point

How does God give us guidance? (Prayer, his Word, other Christians, by testing out what we should do etc.) What is faith anyway? Is there such a thing as being unreal in our faith? Brother Andrew (who smuggles Bibles into China) advised people who helped smuggle Bibles in to take as many Bibles ‘as your faith lets you.’ What does he mean?
