Questions – just think about…

OK so who believes that what happens in our world is down to what we do?

Who thinks that this world is in a mess because of us humans?

Who believes that we can change this world?

This advert for Volvo encourages each one of us to do our bit for the environment by switching off lights for ‘Earth Hour’ (March 28, 2020 – but an annual event).

The song for the advert is by a Swedish artist called Sarah Klang and is called “You’ve got the whole world in your hands.” The meaning behind this is that the world is in our hands and we need to act to save the earth.

The Original Song

According to Wikipedia: The song “is a traditional African American spiritual, first published in 1927. It became an international pop hit in 1957–58 in a recording by English singer Laurie London, and has been recorded by many other singers and choirs.”

Facts

Our world is an incredibly complex place – moving around the sun at around 67,000 mph! The earth is in a galaxy called the Milky Way, which is about 100,000 light years in length and 1,000 light years in width. At the core of the earth it is made of around 88% iron which creates a magnetic field. The Hubble telescope has estimated our latest best guess that there are 100 billion galaxies in the universe. And that is just what we can see. Traditional science says we live in a world of 4 dimensions – length, width, depth and time. But pioneering science called quantum physics calculates that we have at least 10 dimensions. Many believe that what we cannot see is bigger and more real that what we can see! Blows your mind, right?!

So let’s get back to the Whole Wide World thing…

A man called Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. One of the purposes was to connect people together for good. Unfortunately it’s been used for good and for evil. As humans, we mess up and create mess, disaster, crime, destruction, poverty, abuse and many evil things. Left to our own ways, we manage to make all kinds of mess, along with some good. Just look around you in the world and through history. Studies have proved the vast majority of wars were caused by man and not by religion.

As a Christian I believe that we do have some control over our world and there are things we can do and should do. We should do all we can help other people and the world around us. But we’re not totally in control of everything in our world. Not even close.

The Volvo advert song says that the whole world is in our hands. But the original song was written to say that the whole world is in ‘his hands’. Who is he? He is God. As a Christian I believe that not everything is in our hands. Humans aren’t the answer to life’s problems. If we were, we would have solved issues by now.

As a Christian I believe that knowing the world is in God’s hands gives identity, purpose, a knowing of where you come from, answers to life’s biggest questions and a hope for the future. I also believe God wants the same hope for you.
