Isaiah 2

Read through all of Isaiah 2.

The Small Group Session

God’s Word which Isaiah saw (not heard) concerning Judah and Jerusalem. It is amazing that Isaiah actually saw this vision – much of which likely concerns the end of the world.

Question – how does God mainly speak to you?

Discuss – how can we be more sensitive to God’s voice?

Latter days…. Last days

The ‘latter days’ are described to use the time from when Jesus returned to heaven. This is also described as being the ‘end days’ and similar.

Where is Isaiah talking about in Isaiah 2?

The Mountain of the Lord’s House. This is the temple area where Abraham offered his son – on Mount Moriah and the same place was bought by David for the Lord’s house built by Solomon. We know that Jesus was also crucified on this area as well. It has great Biblical significance.

What will happen to the mountain of the Lord’s house?

How does this relate to the end times, do you think? (Bear in mind there are different opinions about what will happen at the end of time).

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

It seems clear that this has an end-time significance. The Bible talks about the temple being re-established. It speaks of the mountain of the Lord being raised up and nations streaming to it. Many see this as part of the ‘Millennial kingdom’ on earth where they believe Jesus will return to rule on the earth for 1000 years. It seems clear that Israel will be highly significant during this time. According to this interpretation of the Bible, Jesus will reign over the peoples and nations of the earth during this 1000 years with justice.

Verse 3 – Who comes to Jerusalem…

What do the people who come, say?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Jesus tells us to seek first his kingdom and his ways, his holiness. Challenge – are you doing this and how can you grow in being more like Jesus and seeking him with your whole heart?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Why do they say what they say?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

What comes out from Zion?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Think about the things that Israel has given to the church. Name 5 key things…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

When will verse 3 be fulfilled, do you think?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Verse 4 – The Lord judges between the nations and people

Read Micah 4.1–3. Compare this with Isaiah 2.4…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Read Joel 3.10. What does it say and how does it compare with Isaiah 2.4?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

It appears that Joel was prophesying a time of war, whereas Isaiah 2 is speaking about a time of peace that comes only as a result of Jesus.

Verse 5 – What are we to do?

Write it down below. What does this mean for us today, do you think?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Verse 6 – 9

For what reasons does God reject His people? Also read Deuteronomy 18.9–12.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Verse 10

The Bible talks here about people going into the rocks to avoid God’s anger. But there are a couple of things worth thinking about here.

First of all, Jesus is the ‘Rock’. What does this mean and how can we ‘go to the Rock’ in our daily Christian lives?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Secondly, people will have to hide from God because of the ‘splendour of his majesty’. If God’s splendour is so powerful, what does this mean for us as believers? What does it mean to ‘fear’ God in the right sense?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Verse 12

Compare this to Zephaniah 2.3. What must we be sure to do / how should we be?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Compare this to Malachi 4.1. How does this challenge us to act and to witness?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Verse 13

What will happen to those who trust in other things and not God? See Luke 23.30.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Think and pray

Isaiah 2 is a prophetic chapter – looking to the future of the world. It was also a warning to Judah at the time of Isaiah. It also contains many challenges for us today. Sit in the quiet and ask God to speak to you however he wants. Wait on God and then act on what he says. Maybe tell someone else and pray about it together, or write something below…
