The Rookie

This is a movie about a guy who has a dream to play in the Major League but doesn’t. As a teacher training his team in baseball, they strike a deal. They win their league and he then has to try out for the Majors. Sure enough this happens. Over time, he finds himself playing Major League due to his fast ball – weighing in at 98mph.

The clip is at the defining moment when the team challenge him with the deal mentioned above. They win their league and he then has to try out for the Majors. The school team has just lost a game and he tells them they bottled it. They agree but then go on to challenge him to try for the Majors. He agrees. If you want, you can throw in a clip near the end of the movie when he pitches or when the students walk into the stadium.

The point is that perseverance pays off. The Bible says in Hebrews 12.1, ‘We have around us many people whose lives tells us what faith means. So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back.’

It is also a challenge to hold onto God’s promises to us, to claim them, to believe they will happen and to look towards making that thing happen. If something burns in your heart that you want to achieve for God, throw off bad stuff that would get in the way and fix your eyes on Jesus and run your race.

I have a baseball poster on my wall from Philippians 4.13, (‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’) The strap line on the poster says, ‘Pursue you dream with courage. Prepare your heart with determination.’ Go and do likewise people!
