BIBLE PASSAGE – Luke 24.19-27

‘What things?’ he asked.

‘About Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.’

He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Luke 24.19-27, NIV

1. What was the disciples misunderstanding of Jesus? (verses 19 and 21)

(Answers: a prophet, said/did many powerful things, hoped he’d free Israel)

It must have been very exciting and confusing for these disciples. Imagine: you’d followed Jesus hoping he’d free Israel. He’d then told you he’d be taken away, was then killed, then Mary and the women then some disciples had found Jesus’ tomb empty that very morning! And some angels had turned up saying Jesus was alive. Probably not your average 3 days.

What lessons do we learn about Jesus do you think? Give 2 or 3 answers (before looking at some answers)

(Some answers: Jesus lets us talk while he listens – Jesus walks with us sometimes away from where we should be going – Jesus is always the answer to our questions – Jesus is amazing!)

Once again the disciples are unable to match the teachings of the Old Testament with what has just happened with Jesus. What Old Testament teachings are these?

(Examples: Isaiah 52, 53, 61 and loads more!!)

The disciples walking along the road knew all about Jesus and even knew about some of the predictions in the Jewish Torah (that the Messiah would come and save Israel). They were even walking along with Jesus but they didn’t understand. There are loads of people in the world today who know about Jesus and even know the Bible, but they don’t recognise or believe in Jesus. Sometimes these people are quite hostile towards God.

It is only when Jesus ‘opens our spiritual eyes’ that we see him and understand him for who he really is. Who can you think of and pray for now who is a bit like this – they’ve heard about Jesus but they don’t believe?

How can we live a life that shows Jesus is real? Are there things we need to think about in our own lives that would help others to see Jesus?

Are there times when you can’t put 2 and 2 together when thinking about life, the Bible, your faith? (This means are there times where you just don’t understand?)

What do you think is the answer, spiritually and practically?

Why did Jesus have to suffer on the cross before he rose from the dead? What does the Bible say about this – any ideas?

Unlike these 2 disciples, we don’t get a personal face-to-face with Jesus in person but we do have God’s Word. This is the way we get to know and hear from Jesus. We all know it but do we do it?? Approach Bible study this week as if you were talking to Jesus himself.
