BIBLE PASSAGE – Luke 24.13-18

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognising him.

He asked them, ‘What are you discussing together as you walk along?’

They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, ‘Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?

Two of Jesus’ followers were walking to Emmaus. There was only one subject on their mind – everything that had happened with and to Jesus.

a. Read what had just happened (Luke 24.1-12). Write a summary of this

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

b. How come the disciples didn’t recognise Jesus?

c. Now read Mark 16.12. Do you think this was a reason?

On may occasions before his death, Jesus was frustrated by the way his disciples thought only in the physical world and not (yet) spiritually. Do you think this may have been a reason why they didn’t recognise Jesus? Why?

d. Read verse 16 of Luke 24. Why do you think Jesus kept himself from being recognised? Was Jesus messing with them? Testing their reactions? Give 2 or 3 ideas..

We read that these guys were animated, they were talking worse than 2 old women at a hairdressers. They either didn’t see Jesus or they ignored him until he spoke to them. When Jesus spoke they stopped and looked sad.

WHAT WE CAN LEARN – ACTION

1. Ask the Holy Spirit to search you as you sit in silence and wait for Jesus to talk to you. Ask him to point out where you have been ignoring Jesus in your life, and what needs to change.

2. Maybe you need to stop. Or maybe when Jesus speaks it will make you stop. maybe Jesus wants to break into your life today and get your attention. Be careful. I’d listen if I was you!!

3. Jesus asked the disciples a question he knew the answer to but it forced the disciples to identify something and maybe come to terms with it. Are there issues you need to come to terms with, maybe from your past. Like with the disciples on the Emma us. Road, Jesus wants to walk with you, talk with you and minister to you

Video Clip

If you want a clip, show Only Fools and Horses ‘Time On Our Hands’ where Del deliberately stops the lift with him and Rodney in so Rodney is forced to confront the fact that his baby has died. Careful – the end bit contains swearing!

Alternatively, show the classic scene when both Rodney and Del faint at the auction of the ‘Harrison Lesser Watch’ in the same episode (‘Time ON Our Hands’).
