The Hobbit - The Battle of the Five Armies
This movie has been rated in the UK as a 12. It really is basically a movie with lots of fighting and battle scenes, as the title suggests - but there are a few points we can learn from the movie... The main point is actually courage and bravery. The movie is full of this!
Note this includes spoilers...
Chapter 1 - 9:51 to 11:38 ('the dragon is dead')
Points - Father and Son. Bravery. Trust. Spread of courage.
The scene is where Bard (the 'Dragonslayer') works with his son to kill the dragon. You can take back the clip some 3-4 mins if you want to extend it. This is a great demonstration of the nature of God the Father and Jesus the Son in many ways. The clip also illustrates great bravery and the son really has to trust his Father. It also illustrates how God the Father and Jesus the Son (the 'arrow' can represent the Holy Spirit) work together to destroy the enemy (the 'dragon').
Bible - Revelation 12.
Chapter 4. 17:53 to 20:37 ('welcome to the kingdom of Eriborn')
Points - The love of money corrupts
Bilbo runs out and tells the dwarves about Thorin who has become obsessed with gold and the love of money. Bilbo describes this as a 'sickness' and he's right! The same is true for anyone who puts money ahead of God!
Bible - 1 Timothy 6.10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
Chapter 9. 30.35 to 31:48 (appearance of evil eye to disappearance)
Points - Light conquers the darkness.
This reminds us that the enemy has been defeated but that we still have to fight! But light conquers the darkness :)
Bible - Colossians 2.15 (talking about what Jesus did on the Cross...) - "Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it."
Chapter 25. 01:16:50 - 01:18:53 (end of chapter)
Points - Words and wounds of a friend heal.
Thorin's friend challenges him about what he has become - confronting Thorin with truths that he has 'become blind to'. These words wound Thorin and he threatens to kill his friend. But in the next chapter we see how Thorin is confronted with this and changes.
Bible - Proverbs 27.6 - "Faithful are the wounds of a friend..."
Chapter 26. 01:18:53 - 01:20:57 (end of the chapter)
Points - Repentance. Words of a true friend.
Thorin has been challenged by his friend about what he has become. Then Thorin has a supernatural experience that changes him back to who he was destined to be from the madness that had entangled him. The same is true when anyone meets Jesus - they are broken free from evil and released to be who God made them to be!
Bible - Colossians 1.13 - (speaking of God) - "For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son."
