Sea - Part 1

Oceans cover around 70% of planet earth, with the seas carrying around 326 million trillion gallons of water (source: howstuffworks.com, accessed 08/06/12). This water is in a continual cycle involving the sea, evaporation, clouds and rain.

Genesis 7.6 - Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters covered the Earth.

At one point in earth's history (that we know of), the whole earth was covered by water. The Bible tells us that the waters went 20ft higher than even the mountains. The earth was covered by water and only Noah and his family, safe in the ark, were saved. The lesson is we are only safe 'in the ark' (in the family) of Jesus by trusting in him.

The picture below was taken in Charmouth in England. The sun had a moment when it poked its head through the clouds, giving a silvery shine to the waters. In the background of the photo, yellowy 'God rays' of light flowed down from the sun through the clouds onto the water.

When we think about the power of the sea and the life (like fish) God has placed in the sea, we stand in awe of God and his power, provision and love for us. The sea is a place of great adventures, carrying explorers like Francis Drake and Columbus around the globe; today, people dive and surf the waves for adventure. Yet the sea can be a dangerous place that is out of our control. In the sea, we see the nature of God - all powerful with adventures, provision and even 'calm waves' - and yet also someone to be rightly feared and respected. It is only in the 'ark' of God's love and care, through Jesus that we are saved and kept safe from drowning and being lost. Stay close to Jesus and his Word.

Psalm 107:1-3 - Oh, thank God—he's so good! His love never runs out. All of you set free by God, tell the world! Tell how he freed you from oppression, Then rounded you up from all over the place, from the four winds, from the seven seas.

A Prayer: Lord, you are all-powerful. You are kind and good and provide for our every need. You carry us through the storms of life and through rough waters. Yet you are also the God who created the sea, its depths, and mysteries. You are to be feared and you are beyond our understanding, deeper than we can imagine. Yet thank you that you love and care for me. I choose to live under your wings, in your care and in your 'ark' of protection. Amen.
